Hades, Greek god of the Underworld

Poor Hades,a dark and moody god. He was the ruler of the Underworld, the kingdom of the sleeping and the dead. Naturally a moody and taciturn fellow, his life in the underworld would have been dreary and bleak had it not been for his marriage to the Greek goddess of springtime who he had abducted. Though Persephone didn't join him willingly, she soon learned to really love him and see the depths within his soul.  : : : : : :   Ares was the Greek god of war and a rather headstrong fellow. He was also the lover of Aphrodite (Greek goddess of romance and beauty) . . . perhaps he wasn't everyone's favorite (could it have been jealousy? or the fact that he lost as many battles as he won?) There was never a dull moment when Ares was around.: : : : : : :    Wild and unpredictable, and known as the Greek god of wine and ecstacy, Dionysus created quite a stir when travelling, developing an avid group of women followers called the Manaeds. After numerous conquests of of foreign territories, the Olympians could ignore Dionysus no longer and invited him to take his rightful place among the rest of the gods and goddesses.: : : : : : :    Apollo, the Greek god of light, tended to play a civilizing role on Mount Olympus, bringing science, art and music to the ancient gods and goddesses as he brought them the benefits of his rational analytical mind as well. Apollo was associated with the idea of balance and moderation . . . the Golden Mean. : : : : : : :     Poor Hephaestus was lame as t he result of a birth defect. Some would have said that he was lucky, for Hephaestus, thanks to a marriage arranged by Zeus, he was wed to the Greek goddess of beauty and romance, the gorgeous Aphrodite. Eventually Hephaestus overcame his disability and earned a place among the other Olympian gods and goddesses as a result of his outstanding talent as an artist and craftsman.   : : : : : :   Hermes, the charming Greek god of commerce and communication, travelled the world and witnessed (and often participated in) plenty of adventures while serving as anambassador and the personal messenger of Zeus.   : : : : : :  Poseidon, Greek god of the Ocean, was an key figure in Greek mythology, helping to overthrow the Titans and constantly asserting himself upon the world as he struggled (often successfully) to enlarge the territories that were in his domain.   : : : : : :    Ending the rule of the Titans, the sky god Zeus became the ruler of the Olympians in Greek mythology. Zeus was a god with great personal power and he generally used it to everyone's benefit. His amorous liasons with goddesses and mortals alike were well known. Zeus fathered many of the Greek heroes, gods and goddesses and was a benevolent father and protector to each of them.    : : : : : :  The gods and goddesses in Greek mythology, their myths and symbols, occupy an important place in our everyday lives : : : : : : :    Aphrodisiac, musings, the winged messenger, and the caduseus, for example, are remnants of the ancient Greek pantheon   : : : : : : :    Learn to pronounce the god and goddess names........find links to our favorite renditions of their ancient stories.   : : : : : :    Discover how these gods and goddesses play a role in your own personality, how they serve as archetypes and influence the pattern of your life, affecting your hopes, behaviors, and motivations, not to mention your style of relating to others.   : : : : : :    Which goddess are you?
