Hades, Greek god of the Underworld

The Greek god of the Ocean, Poseidon,(he was called Neptune in the Roman version of the myths) was an important player in Greek mythology. The temperamental and tumultuous Poseidon helped to overthrow the Titans and his myths often involves his struggles (usually successful ones) to extend the breadth of the watery territories under his rule. : : : : : :    Poseidon, was a powerful god for he had been given dominion over all of the oceans in gratitude for the important role he had played in the fierce and lengthy battle against the Titans. It was this war that had established the Olympians as the reigning gods and goddesses in ancient Greece. Their allies in the battle, the one-eyed Cyclops, gave Poseidon the three-pronged spear (a trident ) that is his most major symbol, Zeus his thunderbolts, and Hades his cloak of invisibility.   : : : : : :   Hades, the moody ruler of the Underworld, No wonder that Hades was so moody and withdrawn. This god's job description was to maintain order in the Underworld, a realm where the souls of the sleeping and the dead all fell under his control. The lonely existence of Hades would have been rather cheerless were it not been for his wife Persephone, the youthful goddess of spring and renewal. Though Persephone had been abducted by Hades, she soon learned to love him and found a clever way to be with him half the year.  : : : : : :   Given that he was the god of war, the Greek god Ares wasn't all that successful. He managed to lose as many of his battles as he ever one. Perhaps it was because he was rather distracted by his love affair with the stunning beauty Aphrodite.....she was enough to drive any man to distraction.    : : : : : : :       : : : : : :   After the battle that ended the rule of the Titans, the sky god Zeus became the ruler of the Olympian gods land goddesses. He had considerable personal power, as befitted the ruling deity, and usually used it wisely. Like many powerful men, Zeus was sometimes ruled by his sexual desires. His affairs were numerous and varied and the continual source of frustration for his wife, Hera.    : : : : : :  Imagine a life without the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece.
