Zeus inherited the leadership of the Greek pantheon of gods and goddesses after he and his brothers defeated the ruling Titans. Given the extent of his amorous affairs, we are hardly surprised that he had many children . . . and he acknowledged them all whether they were gods and goddesses or mere mortals. Though, like many executive types he could be a somewhat distant father, he was quick to protect and promote his children. Zeus was a sky god who had amassed great personal power that he usually used wisely, for the good of his domain. : : : : : : :    Persistent, powerful, ambitious, and tightly focused on his goals and objectives, the Greek god Zeus writ large in the myths of the Greek gods. Whether he was defending the political order, seducing a goddess, nymph or mortal, punishing a son who had gone astray, or being a doting father to one of his many daughters, Zeus was always up to something intriguing.   : : : : : :  Traveling around the world and attracting followers (many of them female), the young Dionysus was quite a wild one in his youth even though he was very special to his father Zeus, who gave birth to the young god himself since his mother had died when she glimpsed the full majesty of Zeus. The Greek god of the ecstatic experience created quite a stir wherever and his followers went. Eventually the Olympian gods and goddesses could no longer ignore Dionysus and his brave (and crazy) adventures and exploits so he finally was allowed to take his rightful place among the other deities: : : : : : :    The tumultuous Poseidon, Greek god of the Ocean, featured in many of the Greek myths and helped Zeus and his other brothers wrest control from the mighty Titans. Not content to rule just on the Seas, the ambitious Poseidon fought (often successfully) to extend his watery domain.   : : : : : :   The Greek god of light had a civilizing influence on the Olympian gods and goddesses, bringing them science, hanging the walls with art and serenading them with music. He also brought them his bright rationality. One of Apollo's gifts to civilization was the golden mean, representing the value of balance and moderation : : : : : : :     Poor Hades was a dark and moody god. He was the ruler of the Underworld, the realm of the souls of the dead and of those who were sleeping. Normally a moody and rather taciturn deity, Hades and his kingdom would have been a dark and dreary place were it not for the feminine influence of his Queen Persephone.   : : : : : :  Hades won the hand of Persephone (who was called Kore in her youthful years) by abducting this cheerful young goddess of spring. Even though Persephone was traumatized by the abduction, she sensed Hades true nature and soon fell in love with him.   : : : : : :   Hephaestus was born lame and fatherless. But his fate would soon change for he worked long, lonely hours to develop his many talents and skills, and gained recognition when he forged the most powerful weapons, crafted the most beguiling jewelry, and invented the first robots! This "blue collar" god truly earned his place among the rest. He was to marry the drop-dead gorgeous Greek goddess of beauty and love, the stunning Aphrodite.   : : : : : :   Clever and charming Hermes! the Greek god of Commerce was a participant in many of the Greek myths, and was widely known as a silver-tongued devil, a great communicator, both persuasive and sympathetic to the woes of others. He was an ambassador for the Olympians and traveled widely as the personal messenger of Zeus.   : : : : : :   Greek gods and goddesses play an important part in our everyday lives : : : : : : :    Nike (more than just a tennis shoe), was the goddess of victory who stayed by Athena's side, assuring a successful outcome in battle!   : : : : : : :    Find help learning to pronounce the names of the gods and goddesses........use these links to find our favorite renderings of the ancient stories from Greek mythology   : : : : : :    Explore how these ancient deities continue to play a role in your life as part of your own personality type.
